Department Overview

The Commercial Rating and Underwriting (CRU) team is part of the Credit and Fraud Risk (CFR) division, which forms the institutional credit risk management function within American Express. CRU plays a critical role in assessing and managing the risk of institutional exposures across all business units and regions globally. Credit exposures arise primarily through corporate and small business card programs, merchant service relationships, and securities held for firm-wide liquidity. CRU is headquartered in Salt Lake City, with regional teams in New York, London, Singapore, Sydney, and India.

In addition to determining internal credit ratings and probabilities of default, CRU calculates the loss given default for these exposures while underwriting card programs, ensuring compliance with global banking standards (e.g., Basel) and regulatory requirements set by bodies like the Federal Reserve.

Role Overview

As an Analyst – Commercial Rating and Underwriting, you will be based out of India and be responsible for underwriting credit exposures predominantly for English-speaking markets. Your work will involve:

  • Conducting fundamental analysis that includes a thorough review of business, financial, industry, and country risks.
  • Leveraging internal and external rating model outputs.
  • Assessing credit extension needs, profitability, and program structures.
  • Interacting with various teams (front office sales, business unit risk partners, and credit administration) to execute your role effectively.

Job Responsibilities

  • Credit Underwriting & Analysis:

    • Underwrite credit exposures for corporate and small business card programs.
    • Perform fundamental analysis by reviewing corporate financial statements to assess creditworthiness.
    • Evaluate business, financial, industry, and country risks in tandem with rating model outputs.
  • Model Interpretation & Risk Assessment:

    • Utilize quantitative credit models (e.g., Moody’s RiskCalc, CreditEdge) and provide rationale when deviations from model outputs occur.
    • Analyze public agency ratings and prepare supporting analyses.
    • Monitor macroeconomic trends to adjust probability of default (PD) estimations in line with business cycles.
  • Reporting & Documentation:

    • Prepare detailed company-specific and industry-wide credit memorandums.
    • Document underwriting decisions and provide clear recommendations to support investment and risk management decisions.

Desired Skills & Qualifications

Experience & Background

  • Experience:
    • 0-2 years of experience in rating and/or underwriting at a leading financial institution or rating agency.
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree from a top-tier university in finance, accounting, economics, or statistics.
    • Coursework or candidacy in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program is a plus.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of fundamental financial analysis and the ability to review corporate financial statements.
  • Proficiency in GAAP/IFRS accounting standards, corporate valuation, and forecasting.
  • Familiarity with quantitative credit models and an ability to interpret their outputs.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel is required; experience with VBA is a plus.

Additional Attributes

  • Ability to handle complex analyses and synthesize insights.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to prepare detailed credit memorandums.
