Department Overview

American Express Global Commercial Services (GCS) is the leading payment card issuer for businesses in the United States and various international markets. GCS supports business owners and companies with products and services to help them run and grow their businesses.
Control Management at American Express is a comprehensive program designed to identify, measure, report, monitor, and control operational risk exposures across business processes. The GCS Control Management team ensures a robust first line of defense that supports business growth, meets objectives, and demonstrates an effective control framework.


Purpose of the Role

As part of the First Line of Defense, you will be responsible for monitoring customer-facing interactions in accordance with AEMP 88 and GCS Business Conduct Policy requirements. Your role will support the effective functioning of the Business Conduct program by ensuring that operational risk controls and reviews are robust and compliant.


Key Responsibilities

  • Business Self-Testing & Validation:
    • Ensure effective self-testing, validation, and documentation of review activities for risk programs and controls in line with applicable standards and policies.
  • Issue Identification & Mitigation:
    • Proactively identify issues and control deficiencies across communication channels (Calls, Emails, LinkedIn, and Notes notations).
    • Assess the impact of identified issues and collaborate with business partners to develop and implement mitigating actions.
  • Client Interaction Monitoring:
    • Support client signing and relationship-based testing by monitoring the entire sales journey, including all interactions and activities logged by customer-facing colleagues.
  • Process Monitoring & Reporting:
    • Monitor deadlines and commitments related to process monitoring, risk assessment, program documentation, testing plans, reporting, and action plans.
  • Compliance Assurance:
    • Ensure compliance with Policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and American Express Compliance standards in documentation, testing, and certification.
  • Collaboration & Consultation:
    • Work with colleagues, internal partners, and control teams across the organization to promote a well-controlled environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience:

    • At least 2 years of relevant experience in internal control/operational risk, internal auditing, or related roles within the financial services/banking industry.
  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (strongly preferred).
  • Additional Knowledge:

    • Understanding of Operational Risk Management, Operational Risk Events, and PRSA or Business Self-Testing is an added advantage.

Functional Skills/Capabilities

  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • In-depth knowledge of American Express products, procedures, and policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with tools such as Microsoft Office, BCMA, Outreach, One Force, Sales Force, and SharePoint.
  • Familiarity with Conduct Risk and Business Self-Testing will be given preference.
