Role Overview
As an Automation Testing Engineer at American Express, you will play a critical role in defining technical architectures and solutions, ensuring high quality through automation, and driving the continuous improvement of our technology processes. You will be a core member of an Engineering team, guiding end-to-end delivery, conducting code and design reviews, and staying informed on technology trends to optimize our systems and processes.
Key Responsibilities

Technical Architecture & Solution Design:
- Define technical architectures and solutions based on the problem at hand.
- Identify opportunities for enhancements and refinements to standards and processes.
- Fine-tune existing technology with innovative ideas and optimization opportunities.
- Define solution scoping and effort sizing within a cross-functional team.

Team Leadership & Delivery:
- Serve as a core member of the Engineering team, guiding and supporting the team in end-to-end delivery.
- Interpret technical and business objectives to articulate sound and effective solutions.
- Provide technical expertise to drive projects from inception to closure.
- Perform code and design reviews to help the team produce high-quality systems.

Continuous Improvement & Research:
- Stay informed on technology trends and research new methodologies.
- Recommend process and system improvements to enhance overall quality control.
- Contribute to developing best practices in deployment strategies, change management, and application monitoring.
Qualifications
Academic Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent; or Master’s in Computer Applications or a related field.
Experience
- Total experience: 3-12 years, with at least 3+ years focused on automation testing.
- Hands-on experience in API automation using Java, Selenium, Playwright, and Cucumber.js.
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of automation testing paradigms for frontend, middleware, and microservices.
- Proficiency in SQL and familiarity with Big Data ecosystems is a plus.
- Good understanding of deployment strategies, change management, and application monitoring for quality control.
Additional Attributes
- Ability to work independently and lead projects with minimal supervision.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Capable of coordinating within a cross-functional team and handling multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
