The Director, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Risk Management will play a key role in managing and mitigating the risks associated with the development and deployment of AI systems, including both Traditional AI and Generative AI (Gen AI) technologies at American Express. This is an exciting emerging role that requires expertise in AI risk management and governance, aligning risk strategies with business goals while ensuring compliance and effective monitoring of AI-related risks.
AI Risk Management Framework:
Implement and maintain the AI risk management framework, AI risk policies, and capabilities to identify, measure, manage, and report risks related to Traditional AI and Gen AI adoption.
Risk Identification & Controls:
Identify novel and heightened risks presented by both Traditional AI and Gen AI. Oversee the development of appropriate controls in line with AXP’s risk and control framework and collaborate with stakeholders to establish control recommendations.
Risk Assessment & Reporting:
Conduct AI risk assessments across the AI use case lifecycle and prepare Board and management reports on key risk metrics, providing early identification of critical AI risks.
Monitoring & Testing:
Execute continuous monitoring and testing processes to assess AI risks and ensure compliance.
Cross-functional Collaboration:
Work closely with leadership teams across Technology, Privacy, Legal, and Data to ensure alignment in risk management efforts and drive AI-related governance initiatives.
AI Risk Training & Education:
Develop and track an enterprise-wide AI risk training module for all relevant stakeholders to improve awareness and mitigate risks.
Governance & Advisory:
Support the Gen AI Risk Governance Advisory Council and assist with record-keeping and preparation of materials for meetings.
Leadership Reporting:
Track enterprise activities related to AI risk, manage AI inventory, escalations, and provide leadership reporting on AI risk-taking initiatives.
Regulatory Support:
Assist internal teams with regulatory exams, public disclosures, and risk committee reporting.
Experience:
Minimum of 8 years of experience in risk management within the financial services industry.
Proven experience in operationalizing risk management frameworks for both emerging and existing risks.
Technical Expertise:
Deep understanding of AI and machine learning technologies, with a focus on identifying potential risks.
Knowledge of large language models (LLMs) and technology architecture, especially for cloud-based AI deployments, is a plus.
Familiarity with AI risk management, financial services regulations, and ethical AI principles.
Education:
Advanced degree in Technology, Engineering, Risk Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related disciplines is preferred.
Analytical Expertise:
Proven expertise in data-driven risk management, utilizing analytics tools and technologies to assess and mitigate AI risks.
Leadership & Communication:
Excellent communication and leadership skills to influence cross-functional teams and drive AI risk management outcomes.
Certifications:
Relevant industry certifications in AI or Risk Management are a plus.
